Organic Living Soil (OLS)
By Anna Ervin & Nyomi Barrick
Welcome back, Cannabi-nerds!
Organic living soil is a complex system. So, what makes it a preference for patients and growers alike? Mosaic’s Educational Specialist, Nyomi Barrick, explains that the details can vary, but at the end of the day OLS all boils down to clean medicine. Those who choose this method of cultivation are aiming to keep the plant as free from unnecessary chemicals as possible. Because cannabis is used medicinally, patients depend on growers to make sure they are providing safe and effective products. This is what makes OLS an ideal choice for the production of clean medicine.
There are four main components of soil: minerals, organic matter, water, and air.
Organic matter is one of the four factors that make up soil. It is composed of decaying plant material and living matter. In the soil science realm, it is known as parent material. What is found in the parent material will have an affect on the development of the soil profile. Organic matter is responsible for a large quantity of the microbial activity that takes place in the soil. This activity also plays a role in moderating the plant availability of nutrients.
Another factor that makes OLS a great option for cannabis cultivation is that it is rich in nutrients and microorganisms, which play a large role in making those nutrients plant-available. All natural ecosystems are in pursuit of balance, and soil systems utilize the processes of chemistry, biology, and even physics to reach that perfect balance. The term “organic” in production agriculture is defined by it’s non-use of chemicals to control plant growth or pests. This means that OLS relies on it’s own natural system to self-correct and sustain itself, with help from the growers, of course!
In theory, it could also be likely that these natural systems could have a beneficial effect on the terpenes and cannabinoids found in cannabis, but we don’t have enough research to prove this theory just yet.
These are just a few of the reasons that Resonant believes that organically amended soil-grown flower is the most effective for our patients. We hope that you’ve enjoyed learning a bit about the cultivation of your medicine today!
